Incursion Details

Location:                                           School classroom

Cost:                                                  $400 for up to 20 students (no minimum), plus $20 per additional student 

Max class size:                                  30 students (we can run discounted same-day serial classes if required)

Times:                                               School hours

Other:                                               Travel costs apply for incursion locations over 25km from Kew

                                                          No GST is applicable to the incursion for registered schools

Excursion Details

Location:                                           Lentil as Anything, The Convent Abbotsford

Cost:                                                  Min. $450 for up to 15 students, plus $30 per additional student

Max class size:                                  30 students

Times:                                               10.00am to 12.00pm

Other:                                               No GST is applicable to the excursion for registered schools


What the students will get

  • A truly educational, hands-on, and fun experience at school (Part 1 - Incursion).

What the students will learn and do

Theme A - Food Studies (Grades 9 - 12)

  • Incursion

Understanding:  “At the heart of Lentil as Anything is the understanding that food, culture and community are inseparably linked”. Shanaka, Founder of Lentil as Anything

Activity:  My Family Tree.   Objective: To have students reflect on their own migrant history. 

Students will have a four generation family history chart to complete, which will focus on the country of origin of each ancestor they can identify.

Teachers will be provided with a classroom activity of creating a class cookbook, where each student contributes a family recipe from a migrant in their family tree and their immigration story.

  • Excursion

Understanding:  How immigration has impacted on our food culture and changed the ‘cuisine conversation’ in our country. 

Inquiry:  Guided discussion and eating of the ‘dishes of the day’ and the stories behind them and the staff.  Q&A with selected staff members on the cuisine of their country, cooking techniques, the environment and its impact on food development.

Application:  Students have the opportunity to become part of the volunteer workforce and experience the unique workplace culture and skill set after the excursion.


Theme B - Humanities (Grades 7 - 12)

Theme C - Civics and Citizenship (Grades 7 - 12)

Inquiry:  Q&A with selected staff members on the work, community and food culture.  Explore the cuisine of the day and the stories behind these dishes. Eat the 'dishes of the day'. Discuss the organisation of work and the use of volunteers in the workplace. How do they implement safe work practices in this dynamic environment?

Application:  Students have the opportunity to become part of the volunteer workforce and experience the unique workplace culture and skill set after the excursion.
